Eugene Onegin
In the haze of youth and its stormy moods, she lingered… yet the face she longed for remained a mystery.
Tatyana drifts through life with her head tucked inside romantic tales. When the charismatic Eugene Onegin steps across her path, she senses her own story stirring to life. Her hope is bright, but Onegin turns it aside.
Eugene Onegin traces the fragile arc between possibility and what is forever lost. The space between them becomes its own quiet disaster. Tchaikovsky’s luxurious score shapes an opera steeped in memory, longing, and the ache of hindsight.
Kasper Holten’s “hyper-intelligent, deeply moving” staging (Limelight) brings reflection into sharp focus. Through vivid flashbacks, Tatyana and Onegin stand witness to their younger selves making decisions that will echo through the years.
Lauren Fagan returns in triumph after her searing performance as Suor Angelica in Il Trittico. She appears alongside Ukrainian baritone Andrei Bondarenko as Onegin and rising Australian tenor Nicholas Jones as Lensky.
Anna Skryleva steps onto the Opera Australia podium for the first time to lead one of Tchaikovsky’s most treasured masterpieces. The Romantic music enriches Pushkin’s tale of love unreturned and hearts undone.
