Moana (Live Action) (2026)
Disney’s live-action Moana sails into cinemas in July 2026, reimagining the beloved animated adventure that captured hearts around the world. The film follows Moana, a courageous young wayfinder from the island of Motunui, who answers the Ocean’s call and embarks on an epic voyage beyond the reef to save her people and restore prosperity to her homeland. Along the way, she teams up with the larger-than-life demigod Maui, leading to a journey filled with adventure, discovery, and self-belief.
The film stars Sydney-born actress Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui from the animated films. The cast also includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Directed by Thomas Kail, best known for his acclaimed work on Hamilton, the film’s team includes Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Combining beloved songs, breathtaking visuals, and Polynesian storytelling, Moana aims to bring a fresh cinematic dimension to the story while honouring the culture, heart, and spirit that made the original film a global phenomenon.
Moana comes out 8 July 2026 in Australia.
